Social Networking for Career Development
Websites like Facebook and Twitter, while used primarily for social purposes, are gaining popularity for the purpose of job searching, networking, and hiring. Employers are increasingly turning to these sites for information on potential candidates. If used inappropriately, social networking sites can have potentially damaging results on a student’s college application or job search. This session focuses not only on the negative ways in which students can represent themselves on social sites, but also the opportunity that exists for students to present a positive public image that could benefit their academic or career development. School counselors should be aware of the major social networking sites, ways in which colleges or employers are using them, and how best to guide their students towards utilizing them in a beneficial manner. This session aims to promote awareness of the power of social media and how it can impact a student’s academic and career development for better or worse.

No Longer Afraid
"No Longer Afraid" is a movement that was started by students at Lawson High School. Recognizing~ that bullying and a general lack of respect are problems in their school as they are in most schools, these students asked that something be done about it. By informally joining with others with an interest in improving the climate of dignity in the building, these students, along with two teacher sponsors, designed and presented a powerful assembly, school-wide activity, and classroom follow-up that taught students how to deal with bullies, accepting themselves, and treating others respectfully. This entire program had an astonishing impact on the school and brought about a deep reaction from students. It has even fostered a student group called NLA (No Longer Afraid) to plan continuing activities that allow their efforts to grow. This presentation will detail how this movement was planned and show clips from the assembly.

Students with DSM Diagnosis
In our world of ever increasing instability children and adolescents are experiencing and exhibiting psychological problems and/or difficulties earlier in their lives. Because children often have a limited array of behavioral and emotional coping skills to appropriately handle and deal with the numerous serious events and things going on around them we have seen a significant increase in the number of children with DSM diagnoses in our schools.  This presentation will focus on helping counselors identify those children that are experiencing/exhibiting symptoms/characteristics of the most common psychological difficulties in children and adolescents as well as those that may be prone to such difficulties, how to assist these students both in and outside of the classroom, and how to work with teachers in developing classrooms supportive and “safe” for these students.  Numerous case examples will be utilized throughout the presentation and a thorough list of resources will be provided.  Audience participation in sharing their related experiences is strongly encouraged.

Three is Not a Crowd: Triad Supervision for School Counseling Internship
Since the publication of the 2001 CACREP standards for supervision of counselors-in-training, triadic supervision (2 students with one supervisor) is included as an approved method of supervision delivery.  However, counselor educators have had little training or experience in this form of supervision.  This presentation will provide training in the practice of triadic supervision when working with masters level trainees based on current literature and personal experience.  Practical applications will be discussed including pre-session planning, in-session techniques, and feedback delivery.  In addition, the presenter will share ideas of times when triadic supervision is counterproductive.  A video of  a triadic supervision session will highlight the presentation.
